Reappraising the Residual, Part 1 (2/16)

This is interesting because I think this is the first-time media is not talked about in an electronic form. In the article, I read “A Global History of Secondhand Clothing” they talked about how clothing can be a form of spreadable media. The clothes people have worn throughout history have played a huge role in what we know about people from different culture and what stands out about certain cultures. Most people now days think about second hand clothing as clothes you get from an older brother or sister or clothes you get from a second-hand clothing shop like Plato’s Closet. Clothes are so much more than that though. Seeing someone’s clothes from a different time can tell a lot about what life was like during that time. You can also just tell a lot about an individual person from the clothes they wear now days. Trends in media tend to cycle. Something that was once popular that everyone forgot about tends to pop back up years later. The same thing happens with clothing. I have noticed things our parents used to wear back in the eighties are now becoming popular and stylish again. Why is this? I do not know. The author made some great points about how heavily clothing is advertised. This is something most people notice because everyone wears clothes and it is just a normal part of day to day life. Just like internet media, clothing media is spread from person to person and sometimes to strangers we do not even know.
