Introduction to Popular Culture Studies

Posted by tommistowers on April 26, 2017

Today’s blog post was pages 291-305 in Spreadable Media. We have finally come to the end of the semester-long discussion about media spreadability. Throughout the semester many of the readings stuck out to me that will continue to make me question about the spreadability of new media products.  During the last section of reading the big points of the book there were a few topics that caught my eye. In the first pages of the final reading, the book talks about the author Doctorow and how he demonstrated the dandelion-style strategy. The dandelion-style strategy is a central theme around the book. The dandelion-style is the value and the meaning get created as grassroots communities tap into creative products as resources the authors own conversation. The author then makes it open to the public and then spread them to others who share their interests. Throughout the book we have talked about the importance of fan engagement just like the example of the dandelion-style strategy. For every new post, new product, or new source of media made that company will become more successful than other companies if they get their fans involved. “If it doesn’t spread, it’s dead; true enough. But sometimes producers would rather die than give up control.”

One Response to “Conclusion!”

I liked the point you made on dandelion-style, which I addressed as well!
