Digital Media

Posted by mackenzie brown on April 13, 2017

Spreading digital media has become quite popular these days. It is so easy to spread all different kinds of media. The television business is having a hard time keeping up because hardly anyone watches live TV these days. Reading about Whedon’s experience with the Television business and his rate of success with shows really put things in perspective for me. It is so hard to make a successful TV show in this generation. Most people have Hulu or Netflix and I feel like almost everyone has a DVR these days. With all of these things, it makes it so easy to watch TV or movies on your own time. When people record shoes versus watching them live they become less popular. The shows get less ratings if people don’t tune in live and watch it. This is the reason why shows get taken off the air because they do not have enough people watching live. People may be watching on their DVR or on Hulu or Netflix but those do not have the power to keep a show on the air. Whedon is a good example of how this can happen in this essay.

This is just another example of previous discussions in class. You definitely got the main idea about the way media has to be spread to be successful, specifically television. The industries’ dependence on audience engagement is critical to the success of a production.

I agree with you Mackenzie. It is kind of weird to me that the television industry is still so dependent on live ratings. Since there are so many different options to watch media, some of these given to us by the television industry themselves, it truly shocks me that these companies and producers continue to create media knowing that they won’t receive the live ratings they want. Therefore, I believe to effectively allow both sides an equal shot at getting “the most bang for their buck”, we must find a happy medium in the television industry.

Great point. It is important to understand how live tv is affected by viewers deciding to watch on streaming sites instead of live.

  4. I never really thought about why shows got canceled or connected it to the fact that we don’t always watch shows at the time it comes on. It is crazy how the fact that we decide when we want to watch shows or simply don’t have the time to sit down and watch shows at the time they come on anymore really effects tv the way it does.
