Designing for Spreadability

This chapter demonstrates what entices the spread of media. One of the factors that I found really relatable within this topic was the importance of relevance. Content that seems to be relevant to what’s going on in the world seems to spread at a faster pace. One recent example of this relevant topic of media that comes to mind is the music video of Katy Perry’s “Chained to the Rhythm,” which I have heard many debates and read many discussions about online. Although the video is very much over the top- as most of her videos are- the video does demonstrate a relevant look at today’s society. In this dystopian amusement park, displayed in the video, Katy Perry works to demonstrate society’s desire for “constant amusement” and instant satisfaction. In the video, people resemble zombies in such a way that they are oblivious to the world around them. Since this video was recently released depicting this hidden meaning, it has been viewed over 5 million times. Spreadable Media touches on the importance of relevance within spreadability and how people are more apt to spread content that is relevant or can even lead into a deeper discussion within socialization. This is a video that has only recently been released but seems so relatable to our society that can lead into deeper discussion within the participation of audiences.
