Introduction to Popular Culture Studies

Being in college is the first time I have actually lived outside of my small town in Tennessee. i was not only told by my friends and family that Kentucky was more “hillbilly” than Tennessee, but I always saw it in the media that it was. You always here the joke about Kentucky citizens marrying cousins and so on, but I have not been in Kentucky that long, and I already know the way the media perceives Kentucky is so wrong. Kentucky actually has a better education (in high school and middle school) than Tennessee has.

When I came to Kentucky I did not feel like I would be a fish out of water, but sometimes I do. People from here are always commenting on my accent, and when I’m home that never happens. I do not even lie that far away. I just think the way the media perceives the South is ridiculous. They think we are all dumb and that we talk slow. I just think it is pretty funny now, but I use to take offense to it. I’m from the south and I’m proud

P.s. the lack of sweet tea on this campus seriously bothers me.

See this information on the banning of cousin marriages. People might be surprised to find in what states one can, or cannot, marry a first cousin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage_law_in_the_United_States_by_state
