Cult Shows and Nostalgia
Posted by ardrey821 on March 5, 2013
After viewing many cult shows over the past years, i’ve come to the realization that I hate many cult shows that are popular now, such as Glee. The only reason I tuned in to watch this show was because of its huge talk and popularity among facebook and other social networking sights among my peers, so I thought it couldn’t hurt to watch a couple of episodes. After watching glee, I can see why many women and other people find this appealing. I think the main attraction that brings these certain cult shows more views is the since of nostalgia. After watching a couple epsisodes of glee, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Grease. I know many people like me, can reminisce on the good times, love stories, and good songs that Grease produced. I even loved the movie Grease, but the image of a new cult show such as Glee, trying to compete or even come close to replacing Grease is just painful to imagine.
Nostalgia has had a profound impact on the many cult shows I watch today, just becasue it usually takes me back to certain classical films and good times as I listed above. Nostalgia is one of the main reasons why I hate cult shows today, because certain cultshows will never be a classic.

Grease and the songs from the original movie where such a cult classic when I was in high school. We even went so far as to buy the soundtrack on cd! With that being said I think that we may be surprised at what shows of today become the cult classics of tomorrow! Movies and shows that are of little interest today may gain popularity in the years to come. That is one of the interesting parts of becoming older. Seeing things that were once old become new again!

I don’t know if they offer the class on a regular rotation, Chris, but there is a Film Studies course called “Film Genres” that occasionally does “the musical” as a genre. One of the interesting things about it is to start to realize just how long and storied both the coming-of-age teen drama and the musical is…and to think about how genres always build off one another, without trying to necessarily replace or rip off. I personally wouldn’t consider Glee derivative of Grease…The position and reason for singing is much different than the characters of Grease, for instance, and the social position of the kids is certainly a lot different…Plus, Grease was about an original soundtrack. But they are both coming-of-age teenage musicals, to be sure.

I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and entertaining, and without a
doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. Now i’m
very happy that I found this in my hunt for
something regarding this.
